This is a small grants program centered around the goal of parent empowerment. It has four general categories:
- Community Building
- Parent Education
- Leadership Development
- Family Activities
Parent ACTION grantee groups range in size from 6 to 30 families. There are two types of Parent ACTION grants: starter and regular grants. Starter grants are precursors to the regular grant and are funded $1500 each. Regular grants enhance parents' leadership skills through trainings and informal information sharing among groups. Regular grants are funded $3000 each. Approximately half of the grantees are linked with a family support agency, a co-op preschool or community-based organization. The other half are comprised of individual parents. Grantees come from diverse backgrounds including parents with children with special needs, LGBTQ families, parents in recovery and homeless parents.
Grantees receive on-going one on one technical assistance from First 5 staff and consultants in collaboration with agency staff. Regular Parent ACTION grantees attend one orientation and three trainings in the first year and four networking workshops in the second year. Both types of grantees are required to submit two reports per grant year for fiscal accountability.
